The dive

Underwater, with visibility of more than 10 m, you find a pumping station, stables, tools, mine carts, lunch kits, miners' graffiti in lampblack and white crosses where miners died (101 over the mines' history).

Cold (~6 °C) and long overhead dives. Meltwater can take away the visibility and make the water in the mine rise; the hematite walls in the dry part can crumble if you lean against them; old power cables (entanglement).

Profile and sections

Underwater, with visibility of more than 10 m, you find a pumping station, stables, tools, mine carts, lunch kits, miners' graffiti in lampblack and white crosses where miners died (101 over the mines' history).

The iron ore mine worked from 1895 to 1966; No. 2 Mine stopped in 1950.

Depth and profile
From 0 to ~36 m along the 10° slope (dives in 2016), deeper beyond; the maximum depth for divers is not documented. A permanent main line down the main shaft to ~30 m with jump lines (2007, ~2 km) and more than 400 m of new line (2016); only a small part of the more than 100 km of passages has line.
Configuration
Roomy mine drifts: backmount, sidemount or rebreather (for rent at Ocean Quest); drysuit for ~6 °C.

How to get there

Through the mine museum's entrance (13 Compressor Hill, Wabana): ~250 m of walking down a 10° slope to the water, with Ocean Quest's platforms and benches and a golf cart for the cylinders. Until 2024 guided only, through Ocean Quest; it has not been dived since.
