The dive

Laulawi is the only freshwater source of Buton Tengah. Robin Cuesta found the entrance in 2018, and in 2024 an international expedition explored the system.

The village's drinking water source: keep clear of the pump, don't cloud the water and dive only through the operator.
Profile and sections

Laulawi is the only freshwater source of Buton Tengah. Robin Cuesta found the entrance in 2018, and in 2024 an international expedition explored the system. That expedition wants to protect it against cement mining and water bottling, as a geopark.

Depth and profile
More than 5.2 km explored and mapped underwater in 2024: the longest known underwater cave system in Southeast Asia. Depth not published.
Configuration
Freshwater system and drinking water source: sidemount and good trim (estimate).

This is how the planner decides who in your team may dive this cave. Rules your own trip adds (organizer, a mail, the AI) show with your trip.

How to get there

Near Lasongko village in Buton Tengah, on Muna; only with Sulawesi Dive Trek, which keeps the contacts with the village elders. At the entrance the village pumps its drinking water.

Certification requirements, configurations and trimix depths are estimates for planning. Always check them locally and dive within your training. Compiled from web research (Oct 2026): Sulawesi Dive Trek's website (tours, courses, blog of May 2022), InDEPTH (2023), the GUE report of April 2024, Halcyon's article on Expedition Buteng (2025), Oceanographic, Kompas TV and Mongabay Indonesia (2020). No cave has a published entrance, so no pins. Depths and lengths only where a source gives them; certification and configurations are estimates.
