In Sweden you dive flooded mines in the old Bergslagen mining district, between Borlänge, Ludvika and Filipstad. The water is ice-cold (2–6 °C) and the mines are deep, but well organised with fixed lines. Real cave diving in Sweden is expedition work.

Good to know

  • In Swedish mines you dive only via the owner or a club with an access agreement. You book Äventyrsgruvan online; Långban goes through membership on gruvdyk.se, which has a calendar of dive days.
  • Äventyrsgruvan has strict rules: no solo diving, max 120 minutes per dive, trimix and approval deeper than -40 m, max END 30 m, touch or take nothing, change lines only with approval. Breaking them can mean a permanent ban.
  • The water is 4–5 °C at Tuna Hästberg and ~6 °C at Långban, and the air in the mines is only ~4–5 °C too. Drysuit with thick or heated undergarments, dry gloves and two lights; a helmet is mandatory in Äventyrsgruvan.
  • Sala silvergruva is currently closed to divers. In the Bjurälven nature reserve, diving in the cave is banned without a permit from Länsstyrelsen Jämtland.

Tips for safe and enjoyable diving

  • Upload your certificates in advance; approval at Äventyrsgruvan can take up to 48 hours.
  • Gas: Äventyrsgruvan fills air, nitrox, trimix, O₂ and argon on event days (you analyse yourself); Långban has a compressor with O₂ and helium for members. Ask about trimix in Borlänge, Ludvika or Filipstad.
  • In mines, watch for loose rock, old metal, cables and pipes (entanglement), rust and silt, and vertical shafts. Never breathe the air in an air pocket.
  • Emergency: call 112 and report a 'dykolycka' (diving accident); SOS Alarm directs you to an available chamber. Give 100 % O₂. The nearest chamber is Karolinska in Solna.
  • Rest day: dry adventure tours in Äventyrsgruvan, a tour of Sala silvergruva or the mining village of Långban.

Certification requirements, configurations and trimix depths are estimates for planning. Always check them locally and dive within your training.
