Why come here

Cyprus has no cave diving in the usual sense, but it does have a coast full of shallow sea caves, caverns and swim-throughs with daylight around Cape Greco, Protaras and Ayia Napa, mostly from the shore and guided by a local dive centre. At Pyla you dive into a cave from a boat and surface in an air chamber full of stalactites. The surface water is ~18 °C in February to ~30 °C in August, and in good conditions visibility is 20 m or more. Most dives are open to open water divers, Pyla is a cavern dive; some entries are a 1.5–3 m jump or a rocky shore, and you bring your own torch.

Don't miss

  • Caves (Cape Greco): through two swim-throughs and down a large hole to Horse Shoe Cave, then out through the 'Blow Hole', past a rock shaped like Cyprus; take that exit only with a guide who knows it.
  • Green Bay Cave (Protaras): caverns with corals, lionfish and moray eels, and often turtles.
  • Pyla Pirate Caves (Xylofagou): per Cyprus Tourism the only place in Cyprus where you dive into a cave and surface inside a mountain, with bats in the upper cave and, with luck, a monk seal.

On a rest day

  • Cape Greco National Forest Park: Walk the coastal trails to the Kamara tou Koraka natural bridge and along the clifftops above the sea caves, which can only be reached from the sea.
  • Ayia Napa Monastery: A monastery from the Venetian period, partly built into the rock, with a fountain in its courtyard and a centuries-old sycamore by the south gate.
  • Church of Saint Lazarus, Larnaca: A late 9th-century church over the reputed tomb of Lazarus, with a gilded, carved Baroque iconostasis.

Dive centres and fill stations

3 dive centres, fill stations and instructors
  • AquaNaut Diving School (Green Bay, Protaras)

    Green Bay, Protaras

    Guided dives: Caves (Cape Greco)

Rental: Full scuba sets, wetsuits and fins (per its own website).

Dive school since 1989, right on the water at Green Bay. Offers certified divers an 'Ayia Napa caves dive'; on its own blog it describes the Cape Greco caves (swim-throughs, arches and tunnels at 10–18 m, with open exits and daylight; bring a torch). Courses up to assistant instructor, with nitrox; the agency is not named on its website.

  • Easy Divers (Protaras)

Leoforos Protara - Kavo Gkreko 322, Protaras 5296

    Guided dives: Caves (Cape Greco)

PADI 5-Star IDC in Protaras. Guides dives at The Caves in the Cape Greco national park: two swim-throughs with daylight, Horse Shoe Cave and the exit through the 'Blow Hole'. Runs PADI courses up to instructor, with nitrox; no cavern or tec courses on its website.

  • GoToDive (Protaras)

    Protaras

    Training: Trimix, CCR · IANTD

    Guided dives: Caves (Cape Greco)

Technical and rebreather centre in Protaras: IANTD training from decompression to hypoxic trimix, and CCR courses on the Triton, AP Inspiration and ISC Pathfinder; focused on the Zenobia wreck. Names the sea caves and swim-throughs of Cape Greco, but says plainly that Cyprus is not a cave diving destination in the overhead sense. Fills and rental are not on its website: ask.

Order: partners first, clearly marked as partner; then dive centres by distance from Protaras and independent instructors by name. Not a recommendation: check what they offer yourself.

Practical info: rules, fills and emergency numbers

Emergencies

  • 112. Chamber at Famagusta General Hospital (Ammochostos, near Paralimni, close to Protaras; per the health organisation in 2022 the only fully equipped unit, 24 hours a day); another at Paphos General Hospital. Have your dive centre check that it works.

Access and rules

  • Access and rules: Cape Greco is a national forest park; we found no separate permit or rules for diving. Follow the signs in the park: in May 2026 the Department of Forests fenced off a dangerous point of the sea caves because people jump from the rocks there. Some entries are a 1.5–3 m jump or a rocky shore.

Gas and fills

  • Gas: the dive centres in Protaras run nitrox courses; GoToDive trains in trimix and CCR. Which gases they fill is not on their websites: ask.

Water and season

  • Water: at the surface ~18 °C in February to ~30 °C in August; from March to August a thermocline (at first around 9 m). Visibility per Cyprus Tourism 20 m and more in good conditions.

Getting around

  • Travel: Larnaca airport (LCA), about an hour by bus (~€20) or taxi (~€80) to Protaras. Don't fly within 24 hours after diving.

Good to know

  • Read this first: Cyprus has no cave diving in the usual sense.
