The dive
The blue hole drops straight into a deep fracture cave, one of those cracks that is narrow from side to side but can be very tall and deep.
Profile and sections
The blue hole drops straight into a deep fracture cave, one of those cracks that is narrow from side to side but can be very tall and deep. The cave heads inland, towards the centre of the island.
Brian Kakuk first explored and mapped it. During a 15-day expedition by Dr. Thomas Iliffe in search of cave animals, the Advanced Diver Magazine team hacked for an hour through the brush to a small salt pond 0.67 miles (~1.1 km) away, right in the line of the fracture. There a medium-sized passage full of plant debris and heavy silt led to 21 m (70 ft) and a large room no more than ~120 m (400 ft) from the entrance. At its end a very small restriction drops through a slice in the floor; the team left it alone. They named the new cave Normans Blue Hole.
Practical: only expedition dives are described; no dive centre found that dives here.
- Depth and profile
- Deep fracture cave past 82 m (270 ft); below ~40 m (130 ft) visibility is normally 30 m (100 ft) or more (Advanced Diver Magazine).
- Configuration
- No data; at this depth trimix (estimate). The team carried sidemount gear to the pond of Normans Blue Hole.
- Gas
- Trimix from 45 m (148 ft)

How to get there
According to Advanced Diver Magazine 'only a couple miles' from the Caribbean Marine Research Center, on the shore of what the article calls Normans Cay. The land around it is rough limestone with thick mangrove, scrub and poisonwood.
