The dive
Caves in the limestone below the Burren coast, with clear water that turns hazy where fresh and salt water mix. A noticeable flow of fresh water runs through Mermaid's Hole, which has air only at low tide.
Profile and sections
Caves in the limestone below the Burren coast, with clear water that turns hazy where fresh and salt water mix. A noticeable flow of fresh water runs through Mermaid's Hole, which has air only at low tide. Fogg's Hole surfaces inland in "Hell".
The caves formed through the same rainwater dissolution as the Burren's other caves, when the sea level was much lower, and drowned as the sea rose after the last ice age, around 15,000 years ago. Cave divers investigated them from 1984; by 1986 six were described, and Rick Stanton, Brian Judd and Pete Glanvill among others explored Mermaid's Hole.

How to get there
Submarine caves off Doolin Point, dived from the shore; for Mermaid's Hole the divers jumped from the cliff. The pin is the headland, not an entrance.
