The dive

Gota Kebir is a massive reef, known for its tunnels and its south plateau. On the south-east corner the wall is broken by deep fissures you can enter and tunnels you dive through.

No source gives the depth of the tunnels, and the reef walls drop below 40 m: agree a maximum depth with your guide beforehand and stay with them in the tunnels.
Far from everything: the St John's reefs lie near the Sudanese border, and the current there can be strong and unpredictable. Agree beforehand with the boat how an emergency is handled.
Profile and sections

Gota Kebir is a massive reef, known for its tunnels and its south plateau. On the south-east corner the wall is broken by deep fissures you can enter and tunnels you dive through. Around the reef you'll see jacks and barracudas, now and then a manta, and on the two plateaus in the north whitetip reef sharks and bluespotted stingrays.

Emperor Divers, Egypt Divers and Scuba Travel call the tunnels ideal for novice cave divers. Dive The World spells the name Gota Kebira.

Practical: there is no pin on the map, as no source gives the spot. Several drift dives are made around the reef. Per Emperor Divers, the cruise director may ask you to skip a dive that doesn't suit your experience.

Depth and profile
Deep fissures and tunnels in the reef wall on the south-east corner of a reef over 800 m long. No source gives the depth of the tunnels; the reef's east and west sides slope deep, and Dive The World gives 5 to over 40 m for the St John's area.
Configuration
Tunnels and fissures in the reef: recreational gear with a primary and a backup light, with a guide (estimate).

How to get there

Only by liveaboard, on the routes to the deep south (such as South & St John's), mostly from Port Ghalib; the St John's reefs lie ~210 km south of Marsa Alam, close to the Sudanese border. Emperor Divers recommends Advanced for the trip as many dives go below 18 m; Dive The World calls the area one for experienced divers only.

Certification requirements, configurations and trimix depths are estimates for planning. Always check them locally and dive within your training. Compiled from web research (Oct 2026): the websites of Red Sea Diving Safari (site descriptions, diving pages and price lists) and ORCA Dive Club Wadi Lahmy (with pins for Shaab Claudio and Shaab Malahi), PADI (Claudia), Duikersgids (Sha'ab Claudia), Emperor Divers (2023) on the chamber and liveaboard.com on water temperature and visibility. These are guided boat and zodiac dives into caverns, tunnels and cave systems in the reef, with daylight through holes in the roof. Certification and configurations are estimates.
