The dive

Les Grottes du Portail lie in the Réserve naturelle nationale marine de La Réunion.

A maze of tunnels: it is easy to lose your way here. Go only with a guide who knows the caves, with your own light and a backup.
Profile and sections

Les Grottes du Portail lie in the Réserve naturelle nationale marine de La Réunion. A basalt ledge at 15–20 m ends in a steep wall, and at its foot the ocean has cut a maze of tunnels and caverns into the lava over thousands of years. Sponges and hydroids grow in the dark, home to fish, crustaceans and echinoderms.

The caves form a natural area of their own (ZNIEFF, sheet of 2020) of 12 hectares, with 131 species, eight of them typical of the site.

Practical: Manawa calls it a dive for experienced divers. Plongée Salée in L'Étang-Salé dives past lava tunnels in the same reserve and picks the site on the day.

Depth and profile
A maze of tunnels and caverns at 20–30 m (Scubananas); the caves and tunnels lie around 20 m at the foot of a basalt ledge at 15–20 m. The protected area drops on to 45 m.
Configuration
Tunnels and caverns in a maze, guided: recreational gear with a primary and a backup light (estimate).

Certification requirements, configurations and trimix depths are estimates for planning. Always check them locally and dive within your training. Compiled from web research (Oct 2026): dive centres' site pages in SSI's dive guide (SeaUrchin Diving Center, Scubananas), dive.site, the activity pages of Plongée Salée and Scuba World Diving and the article on Réunion's best dive spots on manawa.com, the PADI blog on the top ten dive sites of Mauritius (updated Sep 2026), Le Figaro Nautisme (2015 and Nov 2025), the INPN's ZNIEFF sheets on Les grottes du Portail (2020), Mauritius's official tourism site, the ARS La Réunion list of hyperbaric chambers (Apr 2023), the Réunion marine reserve's leaflet and an e-mail from its management (GIP Réserve Naturelle Nationale Marine de La Réunion, Nov 2026) and a prefecture draft order on shark sightings. These are caverns, reef caves and basalt tunnels with daylight, all boat dives with a dive centre. No source gives coordinates. Certification and configurations are estimates.
