Other people's footage, not advice: how someone else dives here says nothing about what suits your team. Dive within your training.

The dive

Between ~5 and 15 m hangs a cloudy brackish layer (halocline), all year and worst in March–May, with visibility down to ~2 m. Deeper and in the tunnel it is clearer.

Swell often makes mooring at the cliff impossible (dive cancelled). Quick depth changes bring a risk of decompression sickness; the cloudy halocline can disorient you; there is no footing in the pond.

Toriike has been a national natural monument and place of scenic beauty since 2006. In the Yunaitama legend a great wave swallowed a village here.

Depth and profile
The seaward pond is 75 m across and 45 m deep, the landward one 55 m across and 25 m deep. The tunnel ceiling is at ~20–23 m, the sand under the arch at ~40 m; centres usually stay between 8 and 25–40 m.
Configuration
Short overhead tunnel with daylight at both ends: recreational gear with the guide (estimate).

How to get there

Two dolines on Shimoji's west coast, linked to each other and to the sea. Boat dive from the cliff with a local dive centre: through the tunnel into the seaward pond. Requirements per centre: Advanced Open Water and 50+ logged dives (Sun Island), some centres 100+; no discover-scuba guests. Whether you surface in the pond differs per centre.

Certification requirements, configurations and trimix depths are estimates for planning. Always check them locally and dive within your training. Compiled from web research (Oct 2026): ja.wikipedia, showcaves.com, the dive centres' websites (BIGHOLIDAY, Sun Island, Aquatic Adventure), visitokinawajapan.com, nap-camp, skyticket, the prefectural Miyako hospital, Ryukyu Shimpo and DAN. Toriike pin from Wikipedia; the boat sites have none. These are guided boat dives into caverns, halls and arches; the requirements come from the dive centres. Certification and configurations are estimates.
