The dive

The cave opens into a large vault with a high ceiling, where enough light comes in. The cliff at Castel Vieil has many cavities lined with gorgonians and coral; this is the best known of them.

Visibility can change quickly, and surge and swell can reach into the cave. Start into the cave with a generous gas reserve.
Profile and sections

The cave opens into a large vault with a high ceiling, where enough light comes in. The cliff at Castel Vieil has many cavities lined with gorgonians and coral; this is the best known of them.

Practical: Cassis Calanques Plongée dives it for all levels. The site is in the Parc national des Calanques: don't visit sea caves and overhangs too often or for too long, and don't point strong lights at the animals.

Depth and profile
A large vault from 12 m (top) to 24 m (base) · the cliff around it runs underwater from 15 to 45 m
Configuration
All configurations; a high, well-lit vault (estimate).
DPV: Not DPV-suitable (estimate)
One large vault; a scooter adds nothing.

How to get there

By boat with a Cassis dive centre (Cassis Calanques Plongée has it on its list). Castel Vieil is a sea cliff in the part of the Calanques called the Gardiole; the exact spot is not published, so ask the centre.
