The dive

An active resurgence with a permanent stream; the village takes its drinking water from it. The cave is home to a protected bat colony. The cave was first described in 1914.

Strong current that can change direction, and after rain suddenly rising water in the dry gallery (at times up to shoulder height): don't go in heavy rain. Stirred-up silt settles slowly.

Profile and sections

An active resurgence with a permanent stream; the village takes its drinking water from it. The cave is home to a protected bat colony.

The cave was first described in 1914. The first sumps were dived in 1980, Cousteau's team visited in 1990/91, and the black sump was passed in 2005.

Depth and profile
Green sump ~50–100 m to 12–15 m, with strong current; a short yellow sump; then the black sump of more than 400 m and 40–42 m deep, Romania's longest sump, which drops quickly from -7 to -42 m. The cave is more than 1.5 km long.
Configuration
Crawling, wading and carrying between the sumps: sidemount is easiest (estimate). Cold water of 7–9 °C: drysuit.
Gas
Trimix from 40 m

How to get there

At the western edge of Izverna village (Mehedinți), ~100 m past the last house; from road 670 between Baia de Aramă and Balta 6.3 km on DC50. A ~3 m wall with a rope, then a locked gate; ~220 m of walking to an inner lake you cross in a small inflatable, then a sloping rock of ~30 m to the water. Closed to tourists; ask the geopark and the commune about the key and permission.

Certification requirements, configurations and trimix depths are estimates for planning. Always check them locally and dive within your training. Compiled from web research (Oct 2026): InDEPTH (2020), promehedinti.ro, showcaves.com, ro.wikipedia, Adevărul, Financiarul, scubaboard (2011), the paper by Vălenaș et al. on Cotețul Dobreștilor, reports of Polish expeditions (sktj.pl), Alba24, Actual de Cluj (2024), Agerpres, economica.net, transilvaniacavediving.com (2021–2022 programmes) and subaquasport.com. Izverna pin from showcaves; the Apuseni springs have none. Certification and configurations are estimates. Only Izverna is a place for visiting cave divers; the rest is expedition terrain.
