Sea caves of Tonga · about 11 km from Neiafu (Vava'u)

Mariner's Cave (Nuapapu)

  • Max depth16.5 m
  • CertificationOpen water / no overhead

The dive

You swim in from below and surface in an airtight chamber in the rock. Each time the surge pulls back, the pressure and temperature drop and an eerie fog drifts through the chamber.

The chamber has no exit above water: the only way out is back underwater. The surge changes the air pressure in the chamber; for snorkellers the upper entrance is only for strong swimmers.
Profile and sections

The cave is part of Vava'u's folklore.

Practical: free for yachties with their own boat; others join a boat trip from Fangafoa Marina in Neiafu.

Depth and profile
Divers use the lower entrance at 16.5 m; snorkellers swim ~4 m underwater to get in. Inside, an enclosed air chamber.
Configuration
A short passage to an air chamber: recreational gear with a torch (estimate).

Certification requirements, configurations and trimix depths are estimates for planning. Always check them locally and dive within your training. Compiled from web research (Oct 2026): the Tonga Pocket Guide (caves, dive sites and dive operators, updated June–July 2026), the PADI blog (2015), Divernet (2019) on the diver missing in Cathedral Cave, the Freediving Family brochure (2021), Smartraveller and the UK travel advice on Tonga, and Healthpoint on the chamber in Auckland. The dive operators' own websites could not be opened. The pins of Mariner's Cave, Swallows Cave and Shark's Tooth come from the vavau.to diving and snorkelling guide; the other caves have no pin. These are guided boat dives into sea caves and caverns; certification and configurations are estimates.
