The dive

Through a crack in the slope you swim into a high, narrow corridor that opens after about 25 m into a big cavern.

Per the tourism board only for experienced divers certified in cave diving: an entrance at ~35 m, a corridor only ~1 m wide and decompression stops on the way back.
Profile and sections

Through a crack in the slope you swim into a high, narrow corridor that opens after about 25 m into a big cavern. There you see large conger eels among clouds of narwal shrimp, small nudibranchs and sometimes large almaco jacks (Seriola rivoliana). The cavern has an air pocket, but because of the depth you can only surface there with technical equipment. After the cave you climb the wall on the left to a reef of 8–10 m.

The tourism board calls this one of the best cave dives in the Azores; the name means 'cave of the shrimps'.

Practical: Dive Azores goes there from Horta marina. The site lies in the Monte da Guia marine reserve.

Depth and profile
Plan for 40 m: Dive Azores gives 5–40 m for the site, with the cave penetration at 25–30 m. The tourism board puts the crack-shaped entrance at 35 m (max 35 m, average 28 m). A corridor ~1 m wide and ~25 m long leads to a big cavern with an air pocket; on the way back decompression stops along a reef of 8–10 m.
Configuration
High, narrow corridor ~1 m wide: sidemount gives the most room, backmount is tight (estimate). Deep, with deco: plan gas and stages accordingly.
DPV: Not DPV-suitable (estimate)
Short, narrow corridor to one cavern — not a scooter dive.

Certification requirements, configurations and trimix depths are estimates for planning. Always check them locally and dive within your training. Compiled from web research (Nov 2026): the Azores tourism board's official dive pages (Visit Azores: the dive spots, the islands, when to dive and the hyperbaric chambers), the websites of Dive Azores (Horta, with its own map of the dive sites), Scubazores Divers (Terceira) and Haliotis Santa Maria, Wikipedia, OpenStreetMap and the Jornal Oficial dos Açores. Pins from Dive Azores' map (Faial) and Wikipedia (Cinco Ribeiras); the Santa Maria caves have no pin. These are sea caves and lava galleries, dived by boat or from the shore with a local dive centre; certification and configurations are estimates. Rules change — check locally.
