Other people's footage, not advice: how someone else dives here says nothing about what suits your team. Dive within your training.

The dive

Cuba's best-known cenote: a long, narrow cleft with crystal-clear water, where you see tropical fish and coral against a backdrop of stalactites.

Cuban law: guided cavern diving only, in daylight, to 40 m, 60 m of penetration and without deco, after approval by the Comisión Nacional de la Náutica. The cleft goes much deeper (sources: 37 to more than 70 m) and the guides have no cave gear for clients.
Profile and sections

Cuba's best-known cenote: a long, narrow cleft with crystal-clear water, where you see tropical fish and coral against a backdrop of stalactites. Fresh water lies over salt water.

An underwater tunnel connects the cleft to the sea ~70 m away. A diver who dived it twice with a local guide reports a second cave (Cueva Dagmar) ~460 m to the north that can be reached through the cleft; that lies far beyond what the law allows.

Practical: protected area since 2006. In lists the cave is also called 'El Cenote'.

Depth and profile
A cleft along a fault with several diveable fissures; the water sits just below ground level. Sources disagree on the depth: ~30 m (CubaPLUS), ~37 m at the deepest point of a guided dive (diver, forum), 60 m (dive.site) and more than 70 m (Prensa Latina, 2024). What counts for you is the law: at most 40 m, 60 m of penetration, in daylight.
Configuration
Roomy cleft: backmount or sidemount with ordinary recreational gear, as the centre dives it. A CCR is not forbidden but unusual; discuss it beforehand.
DPV: Not DPV-suitable (estimate)
Guided cavern dive: no scooter.

This is how the planner decides who in your team may dive this cave. Rules your own trip adds (organizer, a mail, the AI) show with your trip.

How to get there

On the coast road between Playa Larga and Playa Girón, ~18 km from Playa Girón: car park, a short path up to the pool, restaurant (Ranchón) and a dive centre that runs snorkelling and dive trips. Open 8:30–17:00, free entry. Guided only, with the cavern-dive approval arranged by the centre.

Certification requirements, configurations and trimix depths are estimates for planning. Always check them locally and dive within your training. Compiled from web research (Oct 2026): the Cuban diving regulation Resolución 48/2014 (FAOLEX), showcaves.com, dive.site, Wikipedia, Prensa Latina (2024), CubaPLUS, a Varadero travel guide, a Scubaverse report on the caves near Gibara (2015), an Undercurrent report on Punta Francés (1999), the Marina Marlin Cayo Largo page, the UK FCDO and US State Department travel advice, AP and Al Jazeera (fuel and power, 2026), Rough Guides (Isla de la Juventud). Only Cueva de los Peces has a pin (showcaves). Diving in Cuba is always guided and the law allows no more than cavern diving; check everything with the dive centre.
