The dive

Near Mosstown lie large inland mangrove swamps, cut off from the sea by tall hills. Yet the water rises and falls strongly with the tide: they must be connected to the ocean by underground rivers.

Swift currents at the tide changes: further exploration needs precise dive planning (Advanced Diver Magazine). The Mosstown Twins were pumping large amounts of water into the swamp during the dives.
Poisonwood along the way in: touching it with bare skin causes a nasty blistering rash that can take months to clear (Advanced Diver Magazine).
Profile and sections

Near Mosstown lie large inland mangrove swamps, cut off from the sea by tall hills. Yet the water rises and falls strongly with the tide: they must be connected to the ocean by underground rivers. On the shore lies Mosstown Blue Hole, where a steeply sloping passage drops through layered limestone into a large river tunnel.

Dr. Thomas Iliffe and Brian Kakuk found that blue hole on an earlier expedition, and Kakuk made a couple of exploratory dives. On the expedition with Advanced Diver Magazine an elderly resident showed the team two more spots. Crystal, named by locals for its cobalt-blue water, turned out to be a tight breakdown that pinched off. In the main channel two holes lie ~18 m (60 ft) apart, both pumping large amounts of water into the swamp; the team named them Mosstown Twins. Brett Hemphill made the first dives in both: in the second hole, with a larger tunnel and more flow, his line ran out and he had to turn, on the expedition's last day.

Practical: only expedition dives are described; no dive centre found that dives here.

Depth and profile

Configuration
Crystal is a tight sidemount breakdown along the ceiling; beyond 31 m only without cylinders mounted. For the deep holes trimix (estimate).

How to get there

Inland blue holes in the mangrove swamps by the village of Mosstown on Great Exuma: Mosstown Blue Hole on the swamp's shore, Crystal down a small dirt road at its edge, and the Mosstown Twins in the swamp's main channel, close to the bank. The team found them with the help of an elderly resident; rough limestone, thick mangrove and poisonwood (Advanced Diver Magazine).
