The dive
Beyond the entrance boulder choke the first sump lies in a translucent lake, and a chain of sumps and dry sections follows, where you climb, crawl and scramble, partly through a maze.
Profile and sections
Beyond the entrance boulder choke the first sump lies in a translucent lake, and a chain of sumps and dry sections follows, where you climb, crawl and scramble, partly through a maze. S8 is a superb tube with pale walls. S9 starts with a long descent over coarse sand in a triangular passage 3.5 m wide, continues in a wide, sloping fracture of light-grey, almost bare rock and ends in narrow, sandy passages.
The Tuilède is the lowest of the three springs where the water of the Aven de Rogues, a major cave of the Causse de Blandas, returns to daylight, which is why almost every generation of cavers and cave divers has been drawn to it. The first sump was reached in 1932. Between 1948 and 1950 the SC Montpellier used dry summers to get as far as S4, in 1981–1982 divers reached -50 m in S9, and in 1993 S9 was explored to 430 m. From 2011 to 2019 the Plongeesout team repaired the lines, made a new survey and searched S9 and S5bis for a way on.
Practical: the explorers prefer the highest possible level, ideally about two weeks after a flood, so that obstacles can be passed by swimming. In dry summers the first sumps drop by several metres; the upper galleries can then be reached without diving, through a widened low air space above the first sump, but the carries get harder. Conditions that good do not come every year.
- Depth and profile
- S1 75 m / -11 · S2 25 m / -5 · S3 10 m / -2 (bypassed via the Salle Lombard) · S4 305 m / -19 (main route 120 m / -14), with seven exits · side branch S5bis 200 m / -36 · S5 31 m / -4 · S6 30 m / -4 · S8 20 m / -3, below an 8 m drop · S9 430 m / -50, end point at -35. 2,652 m surveyed in total, vertical range 104 m (+39 / -65).
- Configuration
- Small cylinders: the explorers carried 7 l cylinders. In 2017 they dived S5bis on a backmounted twin 7 l set, because in their view a rebreather suffers in the sometimes narrow carry between S4 and S5bis; in 2013 S9 was dived on a CCR. Sidemount is an estimate.
- DPV: Not DPV-suitable (estimate)
- A chain of sumps with rough dry sections, climbs and a drop in between: no gain.

How to get there
In the Vis gorge near Madières (commune of Rogues, Gard). A short carry: across the river and up a rough gully, then through the entrance boulder choke, threading your kit at arm's length between the blocks, to the first lake, which is dry in summer. A climb, harder the lower the water, leads to the first sump. The FFS sheet gives no access rules.

Large dive shop on the coast near Montpellier (~1 h from Ganges, estimate). Its own site does not mention fills: call ahead. In 2018 a local diver called it the only place around Montpellier for nitrox and O₂.
