The dive

Through the swim-through to the right of the large entrance you reach the main cave, where you drop down a little.

The first cave narrows inside: don't go in without cavern training. It is fairly dark inside; bring a torch and stay with your guide.
Nearby, the channel between Koh Haa Yai and Koh Haa Noi drops deeper than 40 m, for advanced divers only, and the current can run hard there; your guide assesses the conditions.
Profile and sections

Through the swim-through to the right of the large entrance you reach the main cave, where you drop down a little. Inside it gets dark, but the light from the entrance below you makes the rock formations glow, and in one of the chambers you can surface under ancient stalactites hanging from the ceiling. The Cathedral owes its name to the light reflected from the surface. Visibility is usually 20–40 m.

Koh Haa Yai is the largest island of the group; on its south-east side two caves lie side by side, the first with an entrance that narrows inside, the second roomy and bright, with a split entrance.

Practical: Phoenix Divers goes there on day trips with three dives. Dive The World recommends sunrise dives to see the light in the chambers. At low tide snorkellers and freedivers also swim into the caves.

Depth and profile
Plan for 40 m: Aussie Divers gives the site as 5–40 m, Phoenix Divers 35 m at most; the wall drops to ~30 m onto sand. The first cave has its entrance at 12 m and narrows inside. The Cathedral has two chambers, with the main entrance at 14 m and an opening that runs up to the surface; you can surface in a chamber.
Configuration
Large entrances with daylight: recreational gear with a torch, within reach of the light (estimate). For the narrower first cave, cavern training.

How to get there

Boat dive on the south-east side of Koh Haa Yai, on a day trip from Ko Lanta or a liveaboard from Phuket. Dive with an experienced guide from a dive centre. Phoenix Divers takes all levels into the Cathedral; according to Aussie Divers you don't go into the first cave without training.

Certification requirements, configurations and trimix depths are estimates for planning. Always check them locally and dive within your training. Compiled from web research (Oct 2026): the websites of Phoenix Divers Koh Lanta (2026), Aussie Divers Phuket (with the island group's pin) and IDC Phuket (2024), dive-the-world.com, Wikipedia and Bangkok Hospital Siriroj (chamber). The cave entrances have no published pin. These are guided boat dives into caverns and a chimney with daylight in reach; the requirements come from the dive centres. Certification and configurations are estimates.
