Mine diving in Lower Silesia

Why come here

The Sudetes in Lower Silesia were known for the flooded uranium mine at Kowary, with a shaft of about 244 m, but recreational dives on its diving route are suspended until further notice by the owner and the guides (October 2026). Even when it was open, you dived there only guided and by arrangement with the owner. For the Maria Concordia mine near Sobótka there has been no public confirmation that diving still takes place since the fatal accident of October 2021. So for now there is no site here you can plan around, though the dry tourist routes of the Kowary mine and the Karkonosze mountains are open to visit.

On a rest day

  • Podgórze mine: With a miner's lamp you walk almost a kilometre into the mountain through the raw, unlit tunnels of the former uranium mine, learning how uranium was mined here.
  • Śnieżka: The 1,603 m summit of the Karkonosze on the Czech border, with its disc-shaped observatory and a chairlift from Karpacz that shortens the climb.
  • Książ Castle: In Wałbrzych stands the largest castle in Silesia, with Second World War tunnels beneath it that you can visit on a guided tour.
