Profile and sections

Sac Pepem is one of the shallow cave systems near Muyil. The name means ‘white butterfly’. Natalie Gibb, Anders Knudsen and Vincent Rouquette-Cathela were its first explorers; in 2016 it was 1,940 m long, with four cenotes. QRSS now puts Sistema Sac Pepem at 7,084 m, down to -14.6 m, with ten cenotes (Jan 2025).

In 2016 PSAI also listed Sistema Kiix Pepem (‘thorny butterfly’) west of Muyil, 2.2 km and -13.4 m, with five cenotes, one of them called Sac Pepem. Whether that system now belongs to Sac Pepem is not published.

Practical: there is no cavern diving in Muyil, only cave diving (PSAI, 2016). Arrange this cave through a dive centre that works there.

How to get there

On ejido Chuyaxché land near Muyil; who owns the entrance is not published. Not a walk-in site: Under the Jungle (Tulum) lists Sac Pepem as one of its own projects that needs special access and advance planning. In 2016 the Muyil caves were paid with a day fee at the Diconsa opposite the ruins. No map pin known.

Certification requirements, configurations and trimix depths are estimates for planning. Always check them locally and dive within your training. Compiled from web research (CREER, cave-ha.com, opencaves.info, PSAI/QRSS, dive centres; Sept 2026). Map pins are Google Maps or opencaves.info locations (usually the entrance/car park); Ho-Tul, Camilo, Odyssey and Aerolito (Cozumel) have no pin, the Muyil pins are estimates. Drive times are calculated by road for each stay (OSRM, OpenStreetMap; normal traffic, spot-checked against Google Maps within about 4 min); ~ = estimate. Rules, status and fees change often — check locally.
