The dive

Underwater the walls are covered in colourful mineral crusts, with orange limonite stalactites and mining remains over 100 years old.

Soft sediment on the walls and ceiling: visibility deteriorates rapidly.
Artificial walls of waste rock can collapse, blocking the tunnel, burying the line and leaving zero visibility. The limonite formations are fragile.
Profile and sections

Underwater the walls are covered in colourful mineral crusts, with orange limonite stalactites and mining remains over 100 years old. These are the first and for centuries the only opal mines in the world (written records since 1597).

Practical: according to OpalDivers good buoyancy, personal line marking and awareness are essential.
