Espeleobuceo en Provenza
Los ríos kársticos submarinos de Cassis —Port-Miou (hasta -233 m, solo con autorización) y el Bestouan (3,75 km, inmersión desde la costa)—, además de cuevas marinas en las Calanques, en torno a Riou y Maïre y en La Ciotat; la Fontaine de Vaucluse y la cueva Cosquer están cerradas.

Acceso y normas
- Port-Miou: the calanque is a municipal mooring zone of Cassis (harbour office +33 4 42 01 96 24, VHF 9); fishing, spearfishing and anchoring have been banned there since 2004. The river, well and dam are reserved for research and exploration — arrange permission in advance. FFESSM Provence holds supervised discovery days at Port-Miou and the Bestouan (FFESSM licence, level 2, 18+).
- Bestouan: shore dive from Bestouan beach, across a bathing zone and the harbour entrance — take a buoy and watch for boats. With an easterly wind there is swell on the entrance; the FFESSM picks mistral days, when this side is calm.
- Parc national des Calanques (since 2012; Frioul, Riou, Planier and 24 km of calanques): diving is allowed almost everywhere. Diving and anchoring are banned in the archaeological zones 'triangle Cousteau' (near Riou and Plane) and Pointe de la Voile at Cap Morgiou (Cosquer, 500 m radius). No-take zones (~10 % of the marine park, including the eastern half of the Riou archipelago): take nothing. Use the white ecological diver buoys; do not anchor on seagrass or coralligenous reef. In caves: do not let bubbles collect on the ceiling, no fin kicks, take nothing. Landing on Riou only by day, between the Fontagne and Monastério coves.
Gases y carga
- Gas: Technical Diving Academy (Salins d'Hyères) fills air, nitrox, trimix, O₂ and helium. Cassis Calanques Plongée and Plongée Tek Marseille (Pointe Rouge) work with trimix and CCR, Kraken Plongée (La Ciotat) with rEvo CCRs — ask about fills for visitors. CCR and scooter rental: ask.
Agua y temporada
- Season: June–October; water ~14 °C early in the season to ~24 °C in midsummer, visibility up to 25 m; a 7 mm suit with hood is recommended. Below the thermocline it stays cold: at La Ciotat in summer ~23 °C above -17 m and ~13 °C between -18 and -28 m. Spring water: Bestouan ~15 °C, Port-Miou ~16 °C.
Desplazamientos y alrededores
- Sea caves are dived by boat with a centre from Marseille (Pointe Rouge), Cassis or La Ciotat; the ride to Riou's Impériaux takes ~25–30 min or more.
Día de descanso
- Rest day: the Cosquer Méditerranée replica in Marseille (open since June 2022) or the Fontaine-de-Vaucluse spring (access path partly closed since March 2024 because of rockfall).
Conviene saber
- Two kinds of diving: the submarine karst rivers of Cassis (Port-Miou, Bestouan) and sea caves in the Calanques, around Riou and Maïre and at La Ciotat. The Cosquer cave and the Fontaine de Vaucluse are closed to divers.
- Var coast (Toulon, Hyères, the islands): only small, well-lit caves, such as the Grotte Sainte-Marguerite off Le Pradet (-5 to -16 m, from level 1).
