Why come here
Grand Cayman has no cave diving in the usual sense: you dive reef caverns, tunnels and swim-throughs in the coral, with daylight through openings and cracks. Eden Rock and Devil's Grotto are shore dives in George Town, and by boat you go to the West Wall and to the grottos and canyons of East End. The west side is the leeward shore and usually good for diving all year, except in a nor'wester, mostly in winter. Over 48% of the waters around the island are marine park and damaging coral is an offence everywhere; bring a torch.
Don't miss
- Eden Rock (George Town): a shore dive in George Town, where in summer silversides swarm through the caverns, followed by tarpon and groupers; boats pass in the harbour, so surface at the reef or the ladder and carry a buoy.
- Trinity Caves (West Wall): swim-throughs that come out deep on the West Wall, known from the film The Firm (1993); watch your depth and no-deco time there.
- Snapper Hole (East End): in summer tarpon and jacks hunt the schools of dwarf herring here, which a 2014 BBC nature film made famous, and outside an anchor from 1872 rests against a coral head.
On a rest day
- Stingray City: Shallow sandbars in the North Sound where you stand or dive among southern stingrays.
- Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park: A woodland trail in North Side past the breeding habitat of the endangered blue iguana and an orchid garden.
- Seven Mile Beach: The public coral-sand beach on the west of the island, about 10 km long despite its name, which you can walk end to end.

Practical info: rules, fills and emergency numbers
Emergencies
- 911. The islands' only recompression chamber is at the hospital in George Town (now Anthony S. Eden Hospital), run by Cayman Hyperbaric Services, 24 hours a day on call (+1 345 949 2989). Have your dive centre check that it works.
Access and rules
- Rules: over 48% of the waters around Grand Cayman are marine park, with no-take zones; per the Department of Environment, damaging coral is an offence anywhere in Cayman. The boundaries are in the 'Cayman DoE' app. Boats use the public moorings instead of anchoring, and by law a boat must slow to 5 mph near a dive flag.
Gas and fills
- Gas: Eden Rock Diving Center and Ocean Frontiers fill air and nitrox and rent cylinders for shore dives. Divetech (Cobalt Coast and Lighthouse Point, in the north-west) names technical and rebreather training; trimix, oxygen or sorb are on none of the websites: ask.
Water and season
- Water and weather: the west side is the leeward shore and usually good for diving all year; in a nor'wester (a cold front, mostly in winter) the south coast stays calm, the west side does not. Explore Cayman speaks of near-perfect visibility; we found no water temperatures from the dive centres: ask.
Getting around
- Travel: Owen Roberts International airport (GCM) in George Town. Red Sail Sports picks divers up for free at Seven Mile Beach hotels; East End is on the other side of the island.
