  • Water temperature≈ 20–28 °C, varies with the seasonestimated, no reports yet

The dive

The dive begins in open ocean, where emperor angelfish guard the entrance and moorish idols cling to the walls and ceiling.

Beyond the entrance it is dark and the air pocket lies over 40 m in under the island: the only way out is the way you came. The air pressure in the chamber changes with the surge.
Profile and sections

The dive begins in open ocean, where emperor angelfish guard the entrance and moorish idols cling to the walls and ceiling. Then it gets dark: the only light comes from the entrance behind you, until you surface at the back in the bubble, a chamber full of stalactites. The katuali, Niue's sea snakes, lay their eggs here, and outside you sometimes see whales.

Practical: only with the local dive operator.

Depth and profile
Entrance at 8 m; the cave runs over 40 m back under the island, to an air pocket at the back. No maximum depth is published; the Niue Pocket Guide calls it shallow.
Configuration
Dark beyond the entrance: recreational gear with a torch and a backup light (estimate).

Certification requirements, configurations and trimix depths are estimates for planning. Always check them locally and dive within your training. Compiled from web research (Oct 2026): Niue Tourism's blog (April 2025), the Niue Pocket Guide (updated July 2026), PADI's site page (Dome Cave), Scuba Diving magazine (August 2025), Smartraveller (travel advice for Niue), Healthpoint on the chamber in Auckland and DAN Alert Diver (2017) on an evacuation from the South Pacific. Niue Blue's own website could not be opened. No source gives coordinates for the caves. These are guided boat dives into sea caves with the island's only dive operator. Certification and configurations are estimates.
