Sea caves of Niue

Dome Cave (Alofi Bay)

The dive

You cross a rubble patch to the entrance and swim through a short dark tunnel into a chamber inside the island, where up to six divers can surface at once.

You time the entry with the surge, through a short dark tunnel; the chamber has no exit other than back underwater. Mild currents occur at times, and beyond the reef edge the bottom drops away steeply.
The katuali sea snakes are highly venomous, though placid and curious: don't touch them.
Profile and sections

You cross a rubble patch to the entrance and swim through a short dark tunnel into a chamber inside the island, where up to six divers can surface at once. Thousands of ancient stalactites, stalagmites and fluted columns fill it, light plays through the water and the halocline, where fresh and salt water meet, and uga (coconut crabs) sometimes rest on the walls. Dozens of katuali, the flat-tailed sea snake found only on Niue, swim in and out with you.

On the way back you see a blue glow with the silhouettes of fish. Outside, large table corals line the reef edge before a steep drop-off.

Practical: Niue Blue is the only dive operator the sources name; book ahead.

Depth and profile
Count on 30 m: the Niue Pocket Guide calls it a 30 m dive in and under the island. According to PADI the mooring sits over 10–12 m of rubble and the cave is about 25 m long. You surface in the chamber; the only way out is ~8 m back down to the cave's base.
Configuration
A short dark tunnel to a chamber with an air dome: recreational gear with a torch and a backup light (estimate).

Certification requirements, configurations and trimix depths are estimates for planning. Always check them locally and dive within your training. Compiled from web research (Oct 2026): Niue Tourism's blog (April 2025), the Niue Pocket Guide (updated July 2026), PADI's site page (Dome Cave), Scuba Diving magazine (August 2025), Smartraveller (travel advice for Niue), Healthpoint on the chamber in Auckland and DAN Alert Diver (2017) on an evacuation from the South Pacific. Niue Blue's own website could not be opened. No source gives coordinates for the caves. These are guided boat dives into sea caves with the island's only dive operator.
