Cave diving in Turkish Riviera

Why come here

On Turkey's Mediterranean coast you dive sea caves and caverns with daylight, always by boat with a local dive centre: the caves under the Antalya cliffs, the funnel of Afkule near Fethiye, the Blue Cave between Kaş and Kalkan and Rambo near Alanya, where you surface in an air chamber with stalactites. These are cavern dives, not cave systems; with a guide and a torch, and in some caves the endangered monk seal rests. The sea is ~15–17 °C in February and March to 26–28 °C in August, with 25–40 m visibility around Kaş; the dive centres mainly run from May to October. The deep freshwater caves inland are not a travel goal: Kırkgöz needs a permit from the governorship and the Suluin at Finike is closed. Plan around the swell and bear in mind that Afkule continues to 40–60 m.

Don't miss

  • Afkule & Türk Hamamı (Fethiye): looks like an upturned cone with one side cut away; then you follow the wall to Türk Hamamı, a round 'Turkish bath' open at the top where you surface inside after your safety stop.
  • Mavi Mağara (Blue Cave, Kaş): looks small from outside, but inside a cathedral-sized hall opens up, filled with blue light coming in through the underwater entrance.
  • Rambo Mağarası (Alanya): takes you through a wide tunnel into a cave where you can surface in an air chamber, under stalactites reminiscent of those in Damlataş cave.

On a rest day

  • Upper Düden (Antalya): A waterfall in a wooded park on the edge of Antalya, where a rock passage takes you behind the falling water.
  • Lower Düden (Lara): Here the Düden plunges off the cliffs at Lara straight into the Mediterranean; you watch from the terraces above the cliffs or from a boat.
  • Damlataş Cave (Alanya): A dry show cave full of stalactites on the beach west of Alanya castle, found in 1948 during quarrying and then opened to visitors.
  • Kekova and Simena: You see the sunken city of Kekova on a boat tour, by sea kayak or from Simena castle; diving there is banned.

  • Akdeniz Yunus Diving Center (Antalya)

    Antalya

Guided dives: Falez altı mağaraları (Antalya cliffs)

Dive centre in Antalya that offers dives in the caves under the city's cliffs, for certified divers. Its website lists CMAS and SSI courses; which gases it fills and what you can rent is not on it: ask. Contact via WhatsApp.

  • Antalya Scuba Diving

    Antalya

Training: Intro to cave · SSI

Teaches the SSI Cave Diving course in Antalya, the step between Cavern and Full Cave. You must be 18 and hold SSI Cavern, Stress & Rescue and Advanced (or equivalent) with 50 logged dives. The site doesn't say where the training dives are, nor give an address: get in touch by mail.

Order: partners first, clearly marked as partner; then dive centres by distance from Antalya and independent instructors by name. Not a recommendation: check what they offer yourself.

Practical info: rules, fills and emergency numbers

Emergencies

  • 112. Chambers in Antalya: Özel Hiperox (Muratpaşa, 0242 322 00 99) and the Antalya Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi (0242 249 44 00). The university chamber in Muğla is not working; the list of the Turkish diving federation TSSF dates from June 2021: have your dive centre check which chamber works.

Access and rules

  • Access and rules: diving under 14 is forbidden by law in Turkey. For cave dives near Antalya a diving certificate is asked and usually a local guide comes along. Kırkgöz is a protected archaeological site: without permission from the Antalya governorship the Jandarma will stop you. Leave monk seals in caves alone: around Kaş and Gökova they use several sea caves, and they abandon a cave that is disturbed.

Closed or restricted

  • Closed: at Kekova scuba diving over the sunken city is banned (since 1986 per Hürriyet, a protected area since 1990 per Blue Team Diving in 2026); the Suluin cave at Finike is closed to tourism and open only to professional or scientific dives with an official permit.

Gas and fills

  • Gas: nitrox is easy to get in Kaş (usually €5–15 extra per dive). Per its PADI page Dragoman in Kaş also fills trimix; we found no confirmation of its own: ask.

Water and season

  • Water: in the sea ~15–17 °C in February and March to 26–28 °C in August; visibility around Kaş 25–40 m. The dive centres in Kaş run from May to October; in winter strong northerly winds stop the diving.

Getting around

  • Travel: Antalya airport (AYT); to Kaş ~3 hours by bus or hire car.

Good to know

  • Read this first: on Turkey's Mediterranean coast you dive sea caves and caverns, always by boat and with a local dive centre: the caves under the Antalya cliffs, Afkule near Fethiye, the Blue Cave near Kaş and Rambo near Alanya. The freshwater caves inland are expedition terrain: Kırkgöz only with a permit, the Suluin at Finike closed.
